Natural History:  The Red legged Seriema is endemic from South America and, for this reason,  it is one of the most desired birds of the foreign birders. In Brazil is found in the central west. Running in open fields, savannas and in the Pantanal.   Its face is characteristic, It looks like it's wearing makeup : Red bill, blue ring surrounding the eyes and a big crest that looks more like very big false eyelashes.  It may sound old fashion, but it is a very pretty bird.

It's found in couples and they sing in duet, a sound that is unique and that you'll never forget. Although it can fly it prefers to walk, and it's a very good runner reaching 50 Km/h (30 mph). Even when in danger the Seriema prefers to run, flying just to rest the legs for a bit and then lands to restart the run. 

It feeds on insects and small vertebrates, including snakes. Reason why the farmers like those birds around. Thanks to its long legs covered in hard scales the Red legged Seriema is protected against the venom of the snakes, that are killed with strong blows of its feet.

História Natural: A Seriema é uma ave endêmica da América do Sul, e por isso é uma das aves mais desejadas pelos observadores de aves estrangeiros. No Brasil é encontrada no Centro Oeste, em campos, cerrados e no Pantanal. Sua face é bem característica e parece que está arrumada para sair: Bico vermelho, anel azulado nos olhos e cílios bem longos. Pode parecer brega, mas é uma ave muito bonita.

É encontrada em casais e possui um canto muito característico, um som que você nunca vai esquecer. Possui hábitos terrestres e é uma excelente corredora, podendo chegar a 50 Km/h. Mesmo quando ameaçada prefere a corrida e quando se cansa voa pequenos trechos antes de pousar e voltar a correr. 


Se alimenta de insetos e pequenos invertebrados. Os fazendeiros gostam dessa ave pois ela se alimenta de cobras. Graças a suas longas pernas cobertas por escamas bem duras fica protegida contra o veneno das serpentes, que mata com fortes golpes de seus pés.
