Red legged Seriema/ Seriema

Seriema (Red legged Seriema)
Cariama cristata
Nome: Seriema

English nameRed legged Seriema

Family: CARIAMIDAE

Species Cariama cristata

IUCN StatusLeast Concern

Pictures taken at: Pantanal

Natural History:  The Red legged Seriema is endemic from South America and, for this reason,  it is one of the most desired birds of the foreign birders. In Brazil is found in the central west. Running in open fields, savannas and in the Pantanal.   Its face is characteristic, It looks like it's wearing makeup : Red bill, blue ring surrounding the eyes and a big crest that looks more like very big false eyelashes.  It may sound old fashion, but it is a very pretty bird.

It's found in couples and they sing in duet, a sound that is unique and that you'll never forget. Although it can fly it prefers to walk, and it's a very good runner reaching 50 Km/h (30 mph). Even when in danger the Seriema prefers to run, flying just to rest the legs for a bit and then lands to restart the run.

It feeds on insects and small vertebrates, including snakes. Reason why the farmers like those birds around. Thanks to its long legs covered in hard scales the Red legged Seriema is protected against the venom of the snakes, that are killed with strong blows of its feet.

Hyacinth Macaw/ Arara Azul

Nome: Arara Azul

English name
Hyacinth Macaw

Family: Psittacidae

SpeciesAnodorhynchus hyacinthinus

IUCN Status: Endengered

Pictures taken at: Pantanal

Natural History: The Hyacinth Macaw is the largest macaw in the world. 90% of their nests are found in one species of tree, the Manduvi, which has a sofht bark that the macaws can carve. However, they never start a nest from the beginning. They must find a hole in the tree that they will carve to make it bigger. The hole can be made for a woodpecker or for a branch that has fallen.

In Pantanal It feeds on extremely hard seeds of two kinds of palm trees: Acuri, that has fruits all over the year, and Bocaiuva, that is available for 6 months of the year. Unfortunately is an endangered species due manly to deforestation, that take down the trees that they need for nesting and for food. The illegal animal trade and craft work made with their feathers are also major threats.

They are monogamous, which means that after they find a partner they stay with the partner for the rest of their lives. The parents stay with the chick for one and a half years teaching the places to find food and how to break the nuts.

The Hyacint Macaw Project (http://www.bluemacaws.org/neiva.htm) is doing an excellent job in the Pantanal installing artificial nests that increase the number of cavities that the macaws can use. They also check the chicks to see if they are healthy. After 20 years of project the population of Hyacinth Macaws has increased from 1500 to more than 6000. So thanks to them it's easy to see those wonderful Macaws painting the Pantanal's sky of blue.

História Natural: A maior arara do mundo!

Family: Accipitridae

Nome: Gavião Fumaça/ Gavião Caboclo

English name: Savanna Hawk

SpeciesHeterospizias meridionalis

IUCN Status: Least Concern

Natural History: The Savanna Hawk is called smoke hawk in Portuguese. When there is a fire it flies in circles, above the fire, and stays in the smoke. It waits until a small animal runs away from the fire. The animal escapes the fire, but it doesn't escape the Hawk.  If it doesn't succeed it comes back to the place that it was burned and looks for a barbecue.
